Summer Study Days July

Alexander Fairbairn-Dixon

Join us in July for our Summer Study Days

We are delighted to announce our Summer Study Days. Study Days are open to everyone and no preparation or previous experience is required. Study Days consist of discussing some brilliant literature with a group of like-minded individuals.

On the 24 July: Frankenstein’s Science

We will look at how cultural fears surrounding scientific advances enhance the terror of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. We’ll explore Shelley’s examination of contemporary anxieties relating to dissection, anatomy, resuscitation, electromagnetism, and polar exploration. A day of exciting Gothic Science to curdle the blood!

On the 31 July: A Play in a Day: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde

Drawing from the transcripts of Oscar Wilde’s three trials, Moises Kauffmann’s off-Broadway 1997 hit Gross Indecency dramatises the tragic fall of Oscar Wilde. We will read and discuss how this moving, witty, and surprising play explores the enigmatic identity of Wilde. We’ll consider how his celebrity, love of art, his Irish loyalties, and sexuality, all play roles in defining his subversiveness.
